GRAND ISLAND — This year is the 20th year for the St. Leo’s Annual Coat Drive which has been a staple in Grand Island, providing new and gently used coats, hats, and gloves of all sizes to those in need.

This year’s coat giveaway, under the guidance of the Human Concerns Committee of St. Leo’s parish, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, at St. Leo’s Church, located at 2410 S. Blaine in Grand Island.

Peachis Amadou, Outreach Coordinator at St. Leo’s Parish, said the event has been a great success in the past. Last year, 1,629 coats were collected and 1,490 were distributed. Our goal this year is to collect 2,000 coats.

“We are blessed to have such a giving community,” Amadou said. “Their generosity is what makes this event possible.”

Willow Rising Executive Director Teshawna Sawyer states “The St. Leo’s coat drive is a crucial service to our community. Willow Rising is thankful for this partnership so that the survivors of domestic and sexual violence in our community do not have to add needing a coat to the list of stressors they have as they navigate a journey to safety and empowerment. Survivors often flee abusive situations suddenly, without the chance to pack essential items like warm clothing. A coat drive provides them with the warmth and protection in colder seasons. This also eases the burden of purchasing expensive winter clothing, allowing them to prioritize other necessities such as housing, food, and healthcare. Having access to proper clothing helps survivors maintain a sense of dignity and self-worth. A warm, clean, and suitable coat can boost confidence and help them feel more comfortable in public spaces as they rebuild their lives. It’s a tangible reminder that people care and are willing to offer help, which can combat feelings of isolation often experienced after leaving abusive relationships. Coat drives not only meet immediate physical needs but also serve as a symbol of warmth and care, contributing to the overall healing and recovery process.”

Besides at St. Leo’s, new or gently used coats, gloves, and scarves can be dropped off at, Hy-Vee, both Super Savers, U-Save Pharmacy on 13th Street, and Texas Roadhouse.

The past 19 years have shown a great need especially for children’s coats of all sizes, and adult coats XXL and larger. Any leftover coats will be donated to the Church of Christ for its free clothing give-away every Thursday.
