OMAHA — Grand Island’s struggles continued Thursday night with a 42-13 district loss on the road at Omaha Westview.
The Wolverines (4-2) dominated the line of scrimmage, rushing 52 times for 327 yards and piled up 450 yards of total offense. Blake Smith led the way for Westview, rushing 28 times for 190 yards and three touchdowns, while quarterback Luke Shaffar completed 9 of 13 pass attempts for 123 yards and three scores.
The Islanders got a 128-yard rushing performance from Nelsyn Wheeler, including a 24-yard TD run that tied the score at 7-7 with 3:48 to play in the first quarter. Ryker Booth added 77 yards rushing for Grand Island and had a 1-yard scoring plunge in the third quarter.
With starting quarterback Gavin Semm ruled out due to injury for a second consecutive game, Evan Jones again got the start and was 10 of 26 passing for 86 yards with a pair of interceptions. Jalen Warren had seven receptions for 54 yards.
Grand Island will be back in action Friday, Oct. 11, at Lincoln North Star in another district contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Seacrest Field.
