KEARNEY — The decision to turn Kearney Public School’s Glenwood Elementary into a K-5 alternative school was discussed at a town hall meeting on Monday, Nov. 18.
Glenwood Elementary, located at 8105 9th Ave., north of Kearney. Glenwood is a census-designated place in Buffalo County and features a population of 466.
The school is set up for one class per grade and serves around 130 students.
Per Kearney Public Schools, there have been discussions for several years about creating a K-12 alternative school. The Hanny Arram Center for Success was opened in 2021 and serves the 6-12th grade students.
If decided upon, the planned renovation of Glenwood Elementary would be expected in 2025. The alternative school model would serve around 30-40 students.
KPS said the plan would be to move the Glenwood students to Buffalo Hills during the renovation and they would remain there. Currently, the students from Windy Hills Elementary are being taught at Buffalo Hills while the former building is under renovation.
There were multiple community members and parents that spoke at the meeting in favor of not changing Glenwood Elementary and keeping it the way it is.
Some asked for more time and research to go into the proposed change.
The school board plans for future discussion of the issue at its committee meeting during the first weeks of December. Board members will then vote on the topic at a December board meeting.
