GRAND ISLAND — The widespread rainfall across south central Nebraska wasn’t just needed, it was record breaking for one of the Tri-Cities.

According to the National Weather Service – Hastings, the Grand Island Central Nebraska Regional Airport measured 1.46 inches of rain, which broke the old record of 0.71 inches, set back in 2004.

The NWS Hastings office recorded around one inch, while Kearney received 1.12 inches.

The rainfall was due to a potent low-pressure system that moved across the central Plains. The system was able to access an anomalous amount of deep layer moisture that contributed to the rainfall totals.

In the wake of the system departing, the local area will see wind gusts up to 25-35 mph, with even stronger winds on Wednesday, gusts reaching up to 35-45 mph.
