KEARNEY — Alex Straatmann formally took his seat on the Kearney city council after taking the oath of office during the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 17.

Straatmann received over 8,000 votes after running for and being elected to the Kearney city council. He joins the other newcomer to the council, Kurt Schmit.

Straatman is a Kearney native who has resided in the community for 46 years. He currently serves as the Chief Compliance Officer at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

He also serves on the board of directors for the Kearney Public Schools Foundation, Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce and others. Straatmann also served on the Kearney Public Schools Board of Education from 2015-2022.

When asked by the City of Kearney what excites him about joining the council, “I’m looking forward to representing the people of Kearney and gaining a deeper understanding of our city’s operations.”

Straatmann also said, “Kearney is a special place. I’ve traveled all over the world, and I always feel fortunate to call Kearney home. I’m humbled and honored to serve this great community.”
