LINCOLN — Lincoln Police Department investigators have released the name of the 20-year-old man who was mistakenly shot and killed by his 16-year-old brother early Christmas Eve morning in north Lincoln.

Captain Ben Miller says officers were called to the Bridgeport Apartments near 14th and Hilltop around 12:30 on a report of several shots being fired.

When officers arrived, they found Jonathan McCray suffering from multiple gunshot wounds outside on the grass on the south side of the building. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital where he died. Miller says during the investigation, officers determined the victim and his 16-year-old brother had arrived at the apartment complex together, in separate vehicles.

While walking up to the building, the 16-year-old saw an unknown person wearing dark clothing. “After a disturbance on Friday, December 21, where he was jumped by a group of people in the parking lot of a business near 21st and ‘K’ Streets, the suspect was in fear for his safety and fired multiple rounds,” Miller says.

The investigation ultimately determined the unknown person was actually the 20-year-old brother. Both were in possession of guns Miller says. The victim’s gun was
recovered at the scene and police are now in possession of the suspect’s firearm. The 16-year-old is facing charges of manslaughter and use of a weapon to commit a felony.

Investigators continue to interview witnesses. Anyone with information or video of the incident is asked to call Lincoln Police at 402-441-6000. To remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600.
