Fireworks illuminating the night, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)

BROKEN BOW — Custer and Sherman County officials are asking the public not to discharge fireworks as part of their New Year’s events due to the ongoing fire risk.

The City of Broken Bow and Broken Bow Fire Department both made requests on social media last week. The fire department noted they will also not issue burn permits until there is appreciable moisture.

The request comes not long after a grass fire burned over 2,000 acres, crews have had to return to the site several times due to hot spot flare ups.

Loup City Fire Department Chief Mike Dorsey stated, “With New Years Coming up we ask for extreme caution with using any fireworks for your celebration. It is still extremely dry across our district and even though there is a slight chance of some moisture coming it will not be enough to prevent fires. Our recommendation is to forgo the fireworks so that you don’t run any risks of fires.”
