Grand Island Police Department, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)

GRAND ISLAND — The Grand Island Police Department removed 40 impaired drivers off the streets during its latest Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. The grant period resulted in 27 driving under the influence of alcohol arrests and another 13 driving under the influence of drugs arrests.

The Grand Island Police Department received the grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety/NDOT for officers to work proactive overtime enforcement, especially for identifying people driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

It’s all in an effort to reduce the number of people injured in motor vehicle crashes and take impaired drivers off the street. From December 11 to January 1, GIPD officers conducted a total of 879 traffic stops.

Of those arrested, the charges encompassed 304 criminal and traffic violations, 403 citations and 523 warnings. GIPD is committed to making sure we do our part to take impaired drivers off the street. You can do you part by drinking responsibly, having a designated driver or making plans to ensure you and your friends are not driving intoxicated.
