Grand Island Police Department

GRAND ISLAND — A New York Times photographer captured an image of a former Grand Island Police Department officer, now working in California, carrying an elderly man amid the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles.

The photograph was shared by the New York Times via Instagram, along with a number of other photos from the scenes of the multiple wildfires ravaging Los Angeles.

The image depicts Officer Chrystian Banuelos carrying an elderly man amid the evacuations taking place ahead of the wildfires.

Banuelos served with the Grand Island Police Department for five years and is a native of Pomona, Calif. He previously worked as a certified nursing assistant at the Department of Corrections facility for women in York before he came to Grand Island.

Banuelos was awarded the Life Saving Award in 2022 for his actions when he helped an elderly woman who was choking and had lost conscious.

In 2023, Banuelos returned to California and was sworn in as an officer of the Pasadena Police Department.
