GRAND ISLAND — The YMCA of Grand Island is excited to announce the launch of its “Building Brighter Futures” Capital Campaign.

This ambitious campaign aims to raise $6 million to renovate the former Starr Elementary into a state-of-the-art facility that will serve as the new home for the YWCA of Grand Island and its critically-needed childcare center.

In 2024, Hall County was short 1600 childcare spots, an increase from 1200 short the previous year. This shortage of quality childcare options in Grand Island presents a significant challenge for families and the local economy. This project will address this urgent need by expanding the capacity of the YWCA’s childcare center, providing a safe, nurturing, and enriching environment for young children.

In addition to expanding childcare, which is one of the YWCA’s programs, the organization’s civic engagement and racial justice programs will also grow. The YWCA of Grand Island offers programs such as financial literacy classes, babysitting classes, racial justice training, and engages in Get Out The Vote work. The non-profit also houses Mission Menstruation and Happy Healthy Baby, which offer free period products and infant items to those in need, respectively.

“This project is a critical investment in the future of our community,” said Amy Bennett Executive Director of YWCA of Grand Island. “We will be able to more than double our childcare capacity, going from 115 children served to an estimated 300 children served in the renovated space. By expanding our childcare services, we are not only providing essential support to families but also empowering women to participate fully in the workforce and contribute to our local economy.”

The new location will allow the YWCA of Grand Island to grow and to better serve the community. The current location is near Fonner Park at 211 E Fonner Park and the new location will be just down the road near Riverside at 315 Wyandotte Ave.

“This capital campaign represents a critical juncture in our organization’s history.” said April Empfield, Board Chair of YWCA Grand Island. “This project will not only empower us to significantly expand our impact and better serve our community, it will provide a brighter future for our entire community.”

The renovated facility will offer:

  • Expanded childcare capacity: To serve a greater number of children with a focus on early learning and development. Expanding the capacity for our after-school care, summer programs, and other enrichment programs.
  • Modernized classrooms and play areas: Creating a stimulating and engaging environment for children that is unique to our community.
  • Improved program offerings: Dedicated classroom space for Financial Empowerment and Digital Literacy classes. Year round space for mYnight boutique offering special event clothing to youth that may not have access otherwise.

The “Building Brighter Futures” Capital Campaign kickoff will be on January 20th with a short program and a special tour of the current Wyandotte building.
