HASTINGS — Around 60 consecutive hours of below zero wind chills will start on Saturday night due to the latest outbreak of Arctic air across the region.

According to the National Weather Service – Hastings, Arctic air will move into the area Saturday evening and bring bitter cold to the area that will persist throughout the weekend and into Tuesday morning.

Wind chill values of minus 15 to minus 25 degrees below zero are possible, Saturday, Sunday and Monday night. In these conditions, frostbite can develop in as little as 30 minutes.

Monday is expected to be the coldest day, with daytime wind chills remaining below zero for most of the area, according to NWS Hastings, Wind chills during the afternoon will generally be near to below zero with winds gusting out of the north to northwest.

“Temperatures Monday night may actually be a little colder than the previous night with clear to mostly clear skies present. Lows are expected to mostly be in the negative single digits with locations near Ord, NE possibly getting to minus 10 degrees or colder,” NWS Hastings stated.

Temperatures will start a warming trend on Tuesday as a surface area of high pressure begins to shift east of the area. Temperatures are expected to warm into the 20s and low 30s with mostly sunny to sunny skies.

Low temperatures on Tuesday night will also warm as well, with values in the positive double digits.
