ELM CREEK — A residential home north of Elm Creek is a total loss following a fire that broke out during the afternoon hours of Tuesday, Jan. 21.
According to Elm Creek Volunteer Fire and Rescue Chief Tyler Hillmer, at 3:23 p.m., Elm Creek firefighters were dispatched to 9800 block of 100th Road for the report of a structure fire.
Hillmer said when units arrived on scene, heavy smoke and flames were visible from the rear of the structure and was spreading along the roof.
Mutual aid was provided by the fire departments of Miller, Amherst, Overton and Kearney.
Firefighters entered the structure for an offensive fire attack, but due to the worsening condition of the fire and the eventual collapse of a portion of the roof, everyone was pulled out for a defensive fire attack, Hillmer stated.
The scene was cleared around 8 p.m., but units were dispatched back to the site again at 9:37 p.m. after flames had rekindled in a part of the structure. Firefighters remained on scene until midnight for the second dispatch.
Hillmer said the home is a total loss following the fire and the Nebraska State Fire Marshal will likely rule the cause of the fire as undetermined.
Two residents of the home were transported to a local hospital for minor smoke inhalation.
