LINCOLN — In response to executive orders issued by President Trump pertaining to immigration polices, Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner said Friday that his office has no authority to enforce immigration violations.
“Executive orders pertain to federal agencies. They do not pertain to local law enforcement.” Wagner says they are involved in several task forces with their federal partners. “Just as they come to our aid when we need assistance, we will come to their aid when they need assistance.
Wagner says LSO will continue to cooperate within the scope of their legal authority and responsibilities. Wagner’s comments come a day after Lincoln Police Chief issued a similar statement. She says they will continue to enforce city ordinances and state law with equal treatment, regardless of an individual’s immigration status.
“We want to assure the community that filing a police report or accessing law enforcement services is not dependent on citizenship or immigration status and can be done so without fear,” Morrow says.
