Kearney Public Schools Administration Office, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)

KEARNEY — Kearney Public Schools (KPS) remains steadfast in its commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment for all students while adhering to federal and state laws.

The district has established protocols regarding interactions with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to ensure compliance with the law and the protection of student privacy.

Superintendent Jason Mundorf emphasized the district’s dedication to student safety, “At Kearney Public Schools, the well-being and security of our students is always our top priority. While we are legally obligated to follow federal and state laws, we remain committed to safeguarding the privacy of every student and ensuring their learning environment is supportive and safe.”

In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and local board policies, KPS limits the disclosure of student records. The district does not collect or maintain information regarding the immigration status of students or their families, nor does the district capture student social security information.

Superintendent Mundorf added, “We understand that the possibility of ICE investigations can create stress and uncertainty for some families. While we are required to follow state and federal statutes with federal agents, we are equally prepared to support students, staff, and families with guidance and resources should such a need arise.”

Kearney Public Schools has comprehensive safety plans and protocols in place and collaborates with local agencies to provide assistance to families. The district will continue to monitor changes in immigration-related policies and maintain transparent communication with stakeholders as needed.

Attached below is a letter that KPS sent to parents today:

Kearney Public Schools Families,

There has been a lot of press on school responses to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Please know that Kearney Public Schools (KPS) is committed to ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all students in our schools. To maintain this commitment and comply with federal and state laws, our schools have protocols regarding interactions with ICE that we are legally required to follow should an ICE agent visit or contact one of our schools.

Kearney Public Schools follows the federal Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and our local board policies, which define the disclosure of student records and physical access to students. Directory information such as name and address can be released. However, the district does not ask for or keep information regarding the immigration status of our students or their families, nor does the district capture student social security information.

KPS is committed to the safety and security of all students and will comply with applicable laws as necessary. We work alongside local agencies equipped to provide guidance and assistance to parents if needed. KPS will continue to stay informed about the evolving changes in immigration-related concerns and will communicate with stakeholders as needed.

We understand that the possibility of ICE investigations can create stress and uncertainty for families. Please know that we will continue to prioritize our students’ well-being and privacy while adhering to our legal obligations. Thank you for your continued partnership in providing a supportive and secure environment for every student.

Sincerely,

Jason Mundorf
KPS Superintendent
