Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today

NEBRASKA — Travel is expected to become difficult if not impassible in regions of Nebraska Tuesday through Wednesday night.

A winter weather system is expected to move along I-80 overnight and continue throughout the day Wednesday. This system is expected to bring heavy snowfall,
sustained high winds with gusts near 70 mph, and dangerous wind chills.

“Don’t let the spring-like temperatures today fool you. Conditions will change quickly and are expected to impact travel statewide. It’s important to make alternative travel plans today. Visibility and road conditions will be impacted starting tonight,” NDOT Director Vicki Kramer said.

Drivers are encouraged to stay informed about weather and road conditions before deciding to travel by checking 511.Nebraska.Gov, dialing 511 on your phone or downloading the Nebraska 511 app. Officials caution that weather conditions may appear better on camera than they actually are. Remember to slow down, increase following distance, turn off cruise control, and always buckle up.

Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) officials echoed the call for caution.

“The impact of this storm will be felt across the entire state,” said Colonel John Bolduc, superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “The combination of snowfall and strong winds will make visibility difficult in many areas. Adjust your travel plans accordingly and stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.”

Motorists who become stranded can call the NSP Highway Helpline at *55 or 800-525-5555 to speak directly with an NSP dispatcher.
