A Blizzard Warning has been extended until 4 p.m. for areas along and east of Highway 281, (NWS Hastings, Courtesy)

HASTINGS — The Blizzard Warning that is in place across central Nebraska has been extended until 4 p.m. today for areas along and east Highway 281.

Falling snow has mainly come to an end across much of the region, but northwest winds gusting to 60 and 70 mph are continuing to cause blowing snow and reduced visibility, according to the National Weather Service – Hastings.

The Blizzard Warning will come to an end for areas west of Highway 281 at 2 p.m. but has been extended until 4 p.m. for areas along and to the east.

A High Wind Warning remains in effect for the entire NWS Hastings region until 4 p.m. Strong winds are expected to continue as the strong low pressure system lifts to the northeast throughout the day.

Wind gusts throughout the morning were peaking between 55-70 mph, with a 72 mph wind gusts reported six miles southeast of Kearney, the Hastings Airport recorded a gust of 67 mph.

The strong winds have caused power outages across the region, with galloping powerlines or damage to the power poles.
