LINCOLN — For the second time in a month Lincoln Police are investigating a murder-suicide stemming from a domestic violence incident. Police Chief Michon Morrow says just after midnight a 13-year-old called 911 to report he and his mother had been shot inside an apartment near 22nd and ‘G’.

“When officers arrived, officers found a 44-year-old Lincoln man deceased on the floor of a bedroom. He had what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.” She says a 40-year-old woman was found with an apparent gunshot wound. She was taken to the hospital where she died from her injuries.

“Paramedics took the 13-year-old to a local hospital in critical condition with an apparent gunshot wound where he was immediately taken into surgery.” Morrow says he is expected to survive.

LPD believes the man shot the woman and boy before taking his own life. A gun and multiple casings were recovered from the apartment unit.

“Officers also found two other siblings in the residence, a 15-year-old girl and an eight-year-old boy. Neither were injured in the shooting. They were both taken to the BraveBe Child Advocacy Center for forensic interviews.

LPD is also working closely with Lincoln Public Schools, where all three children attend school. “Families who need extra support are encouraged to reach out to their child’s school. While the district is closed due to weather, we’re told counselors will be available in school buildings tomorrow,” Morrow says.

Morrow reflected on the two domestic violence incidents that left four people dead. “Our hearts break for those whose lives were cut unnecessarily short at the hands of perpetrators whose actions have caused irreversible harm and must be held accountable.”

Morrow says Lincoln offers many domestic violence resources. The LPD Victim Assistance Unit is available to anyone in need of support or guidance, not only victims of crimes. Voices of Hope and Friendship Home both work diligently to protect and uplift those who are survivors in abusive situations. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is also available 24/7 at 800-799-SAFE (7233).
