GRAND ISLAND — The Grand Island Fire Department responded to a smoke investigation that led to the discovery of a structure fire at 1725 West Second Street on Wednesday, March 19.

The initial response included Rescue 3, Engine 1, and Battalion 3 around 7:30 p.m. Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke inside the business Star Nails, which is located in a multi-occupancy building. Once on scene, it was determined that there was no one inside the business.

Incident command requested additional resources, including Ladder Truck 4, as crews worked to gain entry to the building. Upon breaching the front door, the incident was upgraded to a working structure fire. Firefighters quickly located the seat of the fire and extinguished it.

Adjacent businesses Paradise Donuts and Subway were thoroughly checked for fire extension, and fortunately no spread was detected. No further concerns were found after a roof inspection and after completing overhaul operations. The fire is believed to be electrical in nature, but the investigation remains ongoing.

Crews cut gas and electricity to Star Nails for safety precautions during the incident, but neighboring businesses were not impacted. Crews also shut off water service at its single shut-off point due to melted supply lines. In total, the estimated damage from the fire is approximately $100,000.
