HASTINGS — Two Hastings College students, two Hastings College alumni, and two faculty members were selected to participate in the No Limits Students Research Conference held at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in early March.
The No Limits conference is an interdisciplinary event for undergraduate and graduate students. This is also available to recent graduates that explore a wide range of issues related to women, sexuality and gender.
Abby Harveson, a psychology major from Scottsbluff, Nebraska, presented her research paper, which was titled “The Impact of Cosmetic Makeup Use Towards Hiring Decision Bias.” Harveson is also a member of the marching and concert bands, a member of the women’s tennis team and a part of the Student Association at Hastings College.
Cecilia Velarde, a double major in marketing and communication studies from Loveland, Colorado, presented her research that was titled “Identity After Loss, A Guidebook on How to Accept and Live After Athletics.” Velarde is a member of the women’s track and field team and is the president of the College’s chapter of Alpha Chi.
Two Hastings College faculty members were moderators at this conference. Dr. Kittie Grace was the moderator for a session titled Navigating College Life through Race and Gender Lenses, while Dr. Juliana Cardoso was the moderator for a session titled Beyond Boundaries: Dismantling Patriarchy in Intimacy, Rituals and Indigenous Identities.
Grace is the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs and a Professor of Communication Studies, while Cardoso is an Assistant Professor of Psychology.
Citlaly Quiroz of Fort Morgan, Colorado, and a 2024 graduate, and Brendan Kachnowski of Rock Springs, Wyoming, and a 2022 graduate and 2024 Master of Arts in Teaching graduate, also presented at the conference.
The keynote speaker at the conference was Ryan Sallans, a speaker, writer and consultant who specializes in sex, gender and healthcare. Sallans has served corporations, healthcare institutions, federal agencies, universities, and communities.
