GRAND ISLAND – Steve Severson with Davis Design gave Hall County Commissioners an update on the courthouse addition project and focused on showing them samples of floor coverings that will be used in the project.

Severson said that Commissioners should receive a guaranteed maximum price in late May.

Severson said the “vast majority” of floor covering with the project is carpet.

“We are trying to be cost conscious when we can,” he said.

The entry hallway to the addition will have tile flooring because it will have more people walking through that section of the building.

Commissioner Gary Quandt asked if the building would be ADA accessible. Severson responded by giving an example of a building area that could be adapted to be accessible. He said in the courtroom, where the judge sits is elevated over the rest of the courtroom. Severson said that if necessary, a chair lift could be installed if a judge is unable to step up to where the judge’s chair is located.

Severson said it had been considered to have a ramp leading to the judge’s chair, but that would take up too much space.

Severson showed a slide listing the square footage for the project. The total square footage is 88,670 square feet, with 60,707 square feet in the addition and 27,913 square feet in the historic part of the building.

Quandt asked Severson when construction would start. Severson estimated that construction would start in July.

Commissioner Pam Lancaster pointed out that there is an advisory committee that includes Commissioners that meets regularly to review construction information and to make sure the project is the best possible project.

Severson said that the more details that Davis Design can include in its work, the less time that Chief Construction will have to spend on the project.
