KEARNEY — Crossroads Mission Avenue would like to invite the public to attend a free showing of the movie No Vacancy hosted by Kearney Dawn Rotary and sponsored by Kirkland Construction and Rick Smith, Agent with Farm Bureau Financial Services.
Admission to the movie is free of charge! The event will take place on April 3rd at 6:30 p.m., showing at the World Theater, located at 2318 Central Avenue in Kearney. There is no cost to attend the movie, but any freewill monetary donation or donations of hygiene items are welcomed and will benefit the homeless ministry of Kearney Crossroads Mission Avenue.
The movie, No Vacancy, was released in 2022, starring Sean Young, T.C. Stallings, and Dean Cain. Based on a true story, the drama highlights a jaded reporter who is demoted to a rural news station. But her cynicism is slowly transformed when she befriends a recovering addict as she works on a story about a church struggling to purchase a motel for homeless families.
Although the church organization depicted in the movie is not related to Crossroads Mission Avenue, the drama relates a familiar scene of homelessness and the struggle an organization can face when desiring to provide services to unsheltered men, women, and families.
Crossroads has been serving the homeless in Central Nebraska for over 40 years, with locations in Kearney, Grand Island, and Hastings. The newest Crossroads location will provide homeless services in Lexington, with construction completion anticipated within the next year. Each campus provides emergency shelter and transitional housing, offering comprehensive care in a nurturing environment. This includes services such as safe shelter, hot meals, life skills classes, and one-on-one case management that helps their guests gain employment, financial independence, and stable housing. This equips Crossroads guests for successful living after their time at the shelter and leads to homelessness prevention. Crossroads Mission Avenue provided more than 76,000 nights of stay for needy Nebraskans throughout 2024.
Daniel Buller, Executive Director for Crossroads Mission Avenue, is grateful for this fundraiser hosted by the Kearney Dawn Rotary and appreciates the opportunity to educate the community about the benefits of homeless services for our needy neighbors. He explains, “No Vacancy is a Christian film that gives insight into the realities of homelessness and of working as an organization striving to provide for the poor. We desire to raise awareness and call people to action, helping to address issues of homelessness and poverty within our communities. I encourage everyone to consider joining us for an evening out to support the ministry and outreach of Crossroads as we work to “bring glory to God through the helping of people.”
As their website states, “The Kearney Dawn Rotary Club is vibrant and active. We believe in not letting grass grow under our feet. First and foremost we are a “SERVICE” club. “Service Above Self”, is the Rotary creed and every member takes that motto to heart.” Anita Lorentzen, Secretary of Kearney Dawn Rotary Club, explains their desire to serve the Kearney community, “I contacted Kearney Crossroads to partner and raise awareness about Crossroads Mission Avenue’s services and outreach. Kearney Dawn Rotary partners with other service organizations and sponsors events when a member makes a proposal and the Club consents. We’ve done a couple of other events at the World Theatre. Several organizations and businesses sponsor movies, and the Kearney area has grown accustomed to a wide variety of films, live music, comedy, and theater performances.”
Crossroads Mission Avenue’s mission is to bring glory to God through the helping of people. Homelessness recovery is a long, complicated process for many of their guests, and step by step, Crossroads is there to help them in that process.
