GRAND ISLAND — A vehicle was stolen in Grand Island as it was being warmed up during the morning of Monday, March 31.
According to the Grand Island Police Department, officers responded to Cherry St. for the report of a vehicle theft.
Officers spoke with a 50-year-old woman who said that her silver 1999 Jeep Laredo was turned on to warm up outside and when they went to leave, the vehicle was gone.
The stolen vehicle is valued at $1,5000.
The case is open and under investigation.
The GIPD warned residents earlier in the year about early morning vehicle thefts.
“All seven thefts involved vehicles that were running with keys inside in the early morning hours. It’s a common practice for people to warm up their cars before heading to work, but there are a few ways to safeguard against theft in the process,” the GIPD stated, “First, never leave your car running unlocked and unattended. If you want to warm up your car, you’re encouraged to lock it and use a spare key to get in when it’s time to go. You’re also encouraged to park in a well-lit, secure area.”
