GRAND ISLAND — Weather permitting, work begins today on US-81, from reference post 18.0 to reference post 19.0, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

Constructors, Inc. of Lincoln is the contractor for this project. Work on US-81 includes replacing the southbound bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad and the southbound bridge over Dry Sandy Creek, as well as concrete paving, guardrail, grading, and seeding. Traffic will be maintained by crossovers and head-to-head two-way traffic in the northbound lanes.

The crossovers on US-81 will be constructed in 2024. Traffic will be maintained with lane closures during construction of the crossovers. The remaining construction will begin March 2025.

Anticipated completion is November 2025.

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.
