WAVERLY — A stretch of Highway 6 in Waverly was shut down following a police pursuit around noon Tuesday. Lancaster County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Ben Houchin says they were called to the U-Save Pharmacy at Highway 6 and Gilford Street on a domestic disturbance.
“When deputies arrived the located a Dodge flatbed pickup that was involved,” said Houchin, adding that deputies tried to stop it, but the 34-year-old Lincoln driver took off and a three-minute pursuit ensued.
The vehicle fled on numerous streets through Waverly. Nebraska State Troopers joined the chase. At one point the pickup came to a stop, but the driver refused to comply with officers’ commands to exit the vehicle. The driver then accelerated and fled again.
The truck eventually spun out at Amberly Road and troopers and sheriff’s deputies used their cruisers to block him in. Houchin says the driver started ramming cruisers and one shot was fired by law enforcement. The driver was not hit by the round.
Five units were damaged between LSO and NSP. Deputies and Troopers then utilized tasers, pepperball, and foam projectiles. Trenton Engel was then taken into custody with minor injuries and transported to Bryan Health West Campus for medical clearance.
After being released he will be booked into the Lancaster County Jail where charges are pending.
No law enforcement officers suffered serious injuries as a result of this incident. The victim of the domestic disturbance was located and is safe.
The Lincoln Police Department’s officer-involved shooting team was called to the scene and Houchin says the Highway 6 was expected to be closed for several hours.
