GRAND ISLAND — A man attempted to flee law enforcement in Grand Island who were investigating an assault on a 25-year-old woman on Monday, Oct. 14.

According to the Grand Island Police Department, officers responded to Poplar St. for the report of an assault.

A 25-year-old woman told law enforcement that Dilan Guzman Fontes pushed her onto a bed, got on top of her and struck her around 15 times.

The woman said that she was punched in the eye and her hair was pulled until some came out. She also said she was choked for around 15 seconds which caused her to feel lightheaded.

When attempting to leave, the woman said that Fontes made her call her ride and lie, saying that she was safe and was going to stay at the location.

Officers with the GIPD located Fontes on Monday, Oct. 14 near Sylvan St. and he attempted to flee from police.

He was later located at the corner of Eddy St. and Fonner Park Ave. after he was exhausted running through several yards attempting to avoid arrest.

Fontes was arrested for third degree assault, strangulation, first degree false imprisonment, terroristic threats, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance and an active Douglas County warrant.
