KEARNEY — The Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chapter at Kearney High School is stepping up to address food insecurity among their fellow students by partnering with the Bearcat Cares Pantry.
Recognizing the ongoing need for accessible nutrition and hygiene essentials, the chapter has chosen to dedicate November, January, and March to collecting donations of food and personal care items to support the pantry’s mission.
Bearcat Cares Pantry currently assists 27 students at Kearney High, providing them with weekly food bags that offer essential support during times when school is not in session. These bags help bridge the gap for students who may not have reliable access to food at home, ensuring they have what they need to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
On Wednesday, Nov. 13, six FCCLA members gathered at Kearney’s Grand Central Apple Market to collect donations from generous community members. Their efforts were met with strong support from shoppers who contributed food items and personal hygiene products that will soon be delivered to Bearcat Cares Pantry. Between 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm the students collected 640 items.
“We’re so grateful for the community’s generosity,” said one FCCLA member. “These donations make a real difference for students who rely on the pantry, and we’re honored to help support them.”
The FCCLA chapter’s continued efforts this school year underline the importance of community involvement in tackling food insecurity issues locally. The chapter invites the community to stay engaged and contribute during future donation drives, as they work to ensure no student faces hunger alone.
