GRAND ISLAND — A driver who was arrested for driving under the influence was found to be in possession of cocaine during a traffic stop in Grand Island during the early morning hours of Sunday, Nov. 24.

According to the Grand Island Police Department, at 3:41 a.m., officers observed a grey Chevrolet pickup with a defective brake light southbound on Broadwell St.

A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified by his Illinois driver’s license as Cristopher Castillo Tavarez.

Officers noted that Tavarez had the odor of alcohol emitting from his person and had red, watery eyes. A standardized field sobriety test was conducted and Tavarez showed signs of impairment.

During the test, Tavarez was also observed to have a white powdery residue in his nose that tested positive on a presumptive test for cocaine. While searching for Tavarez’s person, officers located a small baggy of cocaine.

Tavarez was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence – alcohol and defective vehicle lighting.
