GRAND ISLAND — A driver was arrested for driving under the influence and a passenger in the vehicle attempted to discard of a small amount of cocaine during a traffic stop in Grand Island.

According to the Grand Island Police Department on Thursday, Nov. 28 at 12:06 a.m., a traffic stop was conducted on a green 2001 Saturn Vue.

The vehicle was stopped near 13th St. and Pine St., where the driver was identified as Juan Mendoza, and the passenger was identified Guillermo Mendoza. Police say Juan was unable to provide proof of insurance.

Officers noted a pungent odor of alcohol coming from inside the vehicle, Juan also had blood shot eyes and the odor of alcohol coming from his person.

Juan was asked to perform a standardized field sobriety test and showed, “gross impairment,” and also gave a failing preliminary breath test.

During the course of the traffic stop, Guillermo was observed discarding a plastic bag out of the passenger side rear window. The bag was found to contain a small amount of cocaine.

A search of the vehicle yielded marijuana, a marijuana grinder, various smoking pipes and an open alcohol container.

Both Juan and Guillermo were both arrested and transported to the Hall County Department of Corrections without incident.

Juan was arrested for no proof of insurance, driving under the influence – first offense, possession of marijuana – less than one ounce and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Guillermo was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence and possession of drug paraphernalia.
