Christmas lights in Kearney, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)

HASTINGS — For those who are dreaming of a white Christmas this year, you might have to keep dreaming – currently there is a dry forecast leading up to the holiday.

According to the National Weather Service – Hastings, one out of 50 ensemble forecasts are indicating any precipitation through Christmas Day.

The overall period leading up to Christmas will be generally warmer than normal with the exceptions of Friday, Dec. 20 – Saturday, Dec. 21.

“Therefore, even if we do see any light precipitation leading up to Christmas, rain is more likely than snow at this point,” NWS Hastings noted in a forecast discussion, “Christmas is still more than a week away so things could change, but at this point in time a white Christmas is rather unlikely less than a five percent chance.”

There could be a storm system moving across the central Plains right after Christmas, but the possibility is only showing up in less than 20 percent of the ensemble forecasts.

“There is good model agreement in warming temperatures each day beginning Sunday peaking right around December 24-25. We are currently expecting highs on Sunday in the lower 40s and then rising to the upper 40s and 50s by December 24-25,” per NWS Hastings.
