KEARNEY — Kearney Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Shelia Sanford as the new director of the Bearcat Diner. Sanford will succeed Kate Murphy, who is retiring after years of dedicated service to KPS.
Shelia Sanford brings extensive experience in food service management and a passion for delivering high-quality nutrition to school communities. Her career in food service spans over a decade, including leadership roles in school nutrition and community dining.
“Shelia Sanford’s extensive experience and commitment to school nutrition make her an excellent choice for this important role,” said Kearney Public Schools Superintendent, Jason Mundorf. “We are confident she will carry forward the outstanding legacy of the Bearcat Diner while bringing fresh ideas and energy to the program.”
Sanford has served as the Food Service Director for Minden Public Schools since 2012. In this role, she managed daily and annual food service operations for the district, demonstrating exceptional leadership and organizational skills. Before this, she worked as Head Cook and Trainer at Mosaic in Axtell, NE, from 2010 to 2012, where she prepared meals for residents and trained incoming cooks while overseeing supply procurement.
Sanford studied psychology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and pursued general studies at Hastings College. In addition to her professional experience, Sanford has been an active leader in the Nebraska School Nutrition Association, serving as President (2022/23),
President-Elect (2021/22), Vice President (2020/21), and District Chair (2017/2020). Her involvement reflects her dedication to advancing school nutrition programs and fostering professional excellence in the field.
“I am excited to join Kearney Public Schools as the Bearcat Diner Director,” said Sanford. “My passion as a food service leader is providing nutritious meals to students which enables them to achieve their personal best during their educational journey. I’m excited to work with the amazing team at KPS to continue and further the legacy of high-quality, innovative dining experiences for the success of our students.”
Sanford will officially begin her role as Bearcat Diner Director this summer. Kearney Public Schools extends heartfelt gratitude to Kate Murphy for her years of dedicated service and contributions to the district’s food service programs.
