HASTINGS — The Hastings city council approved a new city administrator with Mark Funkey during their meeting on Monday, Jan. 13.
Funkey had initially been appointed as the City of Hastings Assistant City Administrator in February 2024. Funkey came the City of Hastings from Danville Community College in Danville, Va., where he has served as Vice President of Workforce Services since January 2023.
From January 2008 until January 2023, Funkey worked at Central Community College. He served Associate Dean of Instruction for the Grand Island and Hastings campuses from April 2021 to January 2023.
Funkey has a background with the City of Hastings, having served as a member of the Hastings Museum Foundation Board as well as Hastings Museum Board. He also served as Hastings Museum Board President.
Funkey had been serving under the former City Administrator Shawn Metcalf, who had been placed on administrative leave in September and later terminated during the Sept. 23 meeting.
Metcalf has been with the City of Hastings since 2022, having served as the city manager of Rawlins, Wyo. previously.
The council then voted unanimously to name Funkey as the interim city administrator. Former Mayor Corey Stutte thanked Funkey for stepping into the role, especially during the budget season
During the Monday meeting, Jesse Oswald, Hastings city attorney, noted the terms of the contract which was for a term of three years, Funkey has the choice to renew for three years at the end of the initial term.
The Hastings city council approved Funkey’s contract unanimously.
