HASTINGS — The Hastings Economic Development Corporation (HEDC) has achieved a significant milestone, earning Economic Development Certified Community (EDCC) status for the City of Hastings from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development.

This certification recognizes HEDC’s commitment to fostering economic growth, supporting local businesses, and driving strategic development initiatives. Renewal of this certification is required every five years through an application process.

Additionally, HEDC has been awarded $1.5 million in the latest round of Rural Workforce Housing Fund (RWHF) grants. These funds will directly support two major housing projects in Hastings:

  • The redevelopment of the former Hastings Middle School site, transforming the space into a vibrant residential community.
  • Trailside Village, a new townhome-style neighborhood concept designed to expand housing options for the local workforce.

“This funding is a game-changer for Hastings,” said Shannon Landauer, Executive Director at HEDC.

“Workforce housing is a critical component of economic growth, and these projects will enhance the availability of quality, affordable housing for our community. These funds stay in the community as loans are repaid. This brings the fund total to over $5 million for housing projects.”

The announcement was made during the HEDC Annual Meeting, held on March 12 at The Lark, where community and business leaders gathered to discuss the future of economic development in Hastings.

During the meeting, HEDC elected new board members, welcoming Todd Cerny (Thermo King) and Jeff Schneider (Hastings Public Schools) to the board. Additionally, new Executive Committee members were appointed: Gary Brandt (CPI) and Cody Smith (Central Logistic Services).

The meeting also marked a leadership transition, as Terry Anstine (Five Points Bank) concluded his term as the 2024 Board President, passing the role to Beth Coil (Heartland Bank), who will serve as the 2025 Board President.

Attendees also heard from keynote speaker Bo Jones, founder of CareerPathways.com, who introduced a new workforce initiative launching in Hastings. This platform is designed to connect students, job seekers, and businesses, creating stronger pathways for career development and economic growth.
